Travel Guide: Basic Waray Phrases for Tourists

The blood running through my veins are from the folk of the fearless people in the Visayas region, the Waraynon! My both parents were born in Laoang, Northern Samar. The Waray people are often labelled as brave warriors, as popularized in the Waray folk song "Sa bakbakan diri mag-urong, Sa sinuman ay humahamon" (Waray never step back from a fight, whoever the challenger is.) So if you’re planning to visit the tourist attractions in Samar like majestic rock formation in Biri Island, better bring some useful Basic Waray Phrases to impress the Waray-waray. Kidding! Waraynon are one of the most sweetest and joyous people.

The Waray-Waray language spoken by the Waray people of Samar island, in the north east of Leyte (surrounding Tacloban) and in some parts of Biliran island shows dialectal variations.  Most people from Northern Samar speak Waray dialect called Norte Samarnon.

So here's a list of useful Waray Phrases for tourists.
*This is a Waray dialect from Northern Samar (Norte Samarnon)

Hope this will help in your future Samar-Leyte getaway!

    1. Hi mark, ay oo nga, taga leyte ka pala. Oo nga daw, iba iba. Yung bata din ako e confused din ako sa waray language. Yung taga eastern samar naman e iba yung tuno ng waray nila compare sa north. Hehe. Nakakatuwa ang variation. :)

  2. This is an interesting post. Yup, may ilang words samin sa Northern Samar na iba sa mga nakalagay dito. For example, Maganda/Pretty is "Mahusay" samin. "Mabaysay" on the other hand means "Good" or "Amazing" in the municipality of Catubig and Las Navas. Some words (and even accent) vary also in every town. Hehe.
