Travel Guide: Baler, Aurora

Baler often mistaken as part of Quezon Province is actually the provincial capital of the province of Aurora. Baler is enchanted by wide array of natural attractions and now emerging as one of the top tourist destinations in the country.

Hailed as the Surfing Capital of Luzon, this made the laid back paradise eminent. Weekend warriors, surfers or non-surfers enjoy the big waves as their partner during the happy hours.  Powerful waves are continuous throughout the year and best during October to February when the monsoon carries strong winds to the east coast of Luzon, get ready to surf up! The long stretch of Sabang beach served as the cribbed of this gift from the ocean.

Surfing lessons are available every day. Surf board rental cost P250/hour while the instructor’s fee is P150. If you only need the surf board, you can rent in by hour with the same rate, half day for P400 and P800 for whole day.

Incredible giant rock formations are also what made Baler famous. The Diguisit Rock Formation and the one in Aniao Islet are the notable ones.

Pay tribute to the seven families who survived during the devastating tsunami in Baler on 1735, a monument was built. There’s a stairs leading to Ermita Hill to view the scenic overlooking of the Sabang Beach.  At the view deck, there’s another stairs that will lead you to the shrine with a big cross.

In the town proper, the Baler Museum can be found where the artifacts of Aurora are well preserved. In the parallel street, a house was rebuilt for Aurora Aragon Quezon, wife of Pres. Manuel L. Quezon to honor her contribution and charitable acts in the province.

Baler Church is just in front of the Aurora Quezon's house. The church played an important part of its history, being the refuge of the Spaniards during the era of war.

Touring around Baler and nearby town can be done by hiring a tricycle for around P700 for 3-4 passengers. The tour will cover Baler's countryside attractions and the Balete Tree of Ma. Aurora and the Ditumabo Falls in San Luis, Aurora.
